gutted jester |
alot of variables on this one so im just gona write shit ive learned from working at my local shop doing every role from building them to smooth talking people into paying for tax. my studies shure do help me out here and there but alot of people are getting into bikes and they dont know jack shit.
if you want to cruise and be a cheap bitch then go ahead and buy a bike assembled by some kid in a t shirt with a giraffe on it.
now for those of you who want a bike to last more then 3 months without having to go to your local shop for repairs or parts, and you want a bike that is quality and does not give you a single problem for 10+years then keep reading
today a customer comes in on a mountain bike he was sold 5 years ago and has not gotten a single flat. every shop is different and gives different warentee or free service for X amount of time. the bottom line is if you want to get what you pay for then go to your local shop. ask questions and sit on some fucking bikes.
this write up will be about bmx bikes, i will write my knowledge of road, hybrid, mountain, folding, all kinds of bikes soon enough but for now bmx is the main attraction
if you are just cruising then get anything that feels light, it will have good handling and you can look cool even though you pussy out and cant bunny hop up a curb
for those of you who want to get into street bmx and some day ride 4 pegs like bikes should be rode then go ahead and hit up your local shop. the bottom line is that with bmx you are going to either brake parts cuz your sketchy as fuck, you bought cheap shit to begin with, or you finally realize what frame geometry, what weight, what specs you want your bike at. the shop can help you out with prices, advice, having work done more then you think. loyalty is greatly appreciated.
get something full chromoly, its going to be lighter then everyting you see called high tensile steel and strong as fuck.
all sealed bearings is a fucking must, this is almost 2013 you dont need some nasa shit on your bike but if you even plan to turn a wrench on the fucker or seriously ride then go with sealed bearings, they stay smooth longer, your parts stay tighter longer and the bearings and strong as fuck because of how everyitng stays nice and tight.
do not buy a fucking unsealed bottom bracket with some bullshit 1 piece cranks, tricks are hard on a bike, something like this may be fine for cruising but for real street bmx you need sealed bearings.
go with double wall rims and make sure to get something with proper 25-9 gear ratio, that back hub is light and your sprocket will take a beating way better then a dinner plate sprocket you see on low cheap bikes. a bigger sprocket has more leverage and is usually very thin to "try" and save weight, i should not have to write any more about that, leave the dinner plates in the kitchen
also note that bmx bikes are meant for acceleration and the frame geometry is designed for tricks and so that one can stand and peddle. so dont be a pussy and get some leg muscle, 3 cranks will get you quite far on a good quality bmx bike
dont be afraid to spend money, if you invest in the beginning and get a $450 or higher costing bike you will not regret it in the long run. if you cheap out in the beginning, ride for a season or two you will have broke so much shit that your bike is full custom and you still do not know what you really want ion terms of feel and geometry
buy it from a shop, they will remember and support you, be honest with the shit you did if you break anything and make sure to understand the fact that if you be a cheap fuck when you buy the bike expecting it to last you harsh street abuse then you will be paying for it later with replacement parts.
alot of established companies have ratings on their bikes, such as pro, team, intermediate, it really translates into what you are going to do with the bike. in short the best bmx bike for street abuse is one with full chromoly tubing, heat treated 3 piece, or 2, or 2.5 just not one piece cranks, a thick 25t sprocket and every bearing sealed even in the 9t rear hub, double wall rims and your set
shit like peddles, grips, tires, dont worry about too much thats often the first preference changes you will make to really customize it anyway
any questions go ahead and comment i will be happy to answer whatever it is
